IN IT, THE COMPOSER SYSTEMATICALLY SUBJECTS A FOUR-MEASURE MOTIF TO A SERIES OF VARIANTS WHICH ARE LINKED IN A CONTINUOUS FLOW OVER AN OSTINATO FIGURE.
